4K IPTV: the requirements, and which content is really 4K
Xtreme IPTV delivers streams up to 4K. Whether your screen actually shows 4K comes down to three things at your end: how fast the connection is on the device you watch on, whether that device and the screen can handle 4K, and whether the channel is broadcast in 4K to begin with.

How much speed 4K takes
| Picture quality | Steady speed needed on the watching device |
|---|---|
| HD (720p) | Roughly 5 to 8 Mbps |
| Full HD | Roughly 15 Mbps |
| 4K | Roughly 25 Mbps |
Run the speed test on the device you watch on, since a laptop in a different room tells you little, and run it in the evening rather than at midday, because that is when shared connections are slowest. A cable connection keeps 4K steady far better than Wi-Fi passing through two walls. Build in some headroom as well: a line that measures exactly 25 Mbps falls short as soon as someone else at home starts a download, so 35 Mbps or more gives comfortable 4K.
Which devices can play 4K
| Device | 4K playback |
|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K, Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Cube | Yes |
| Fire TV Stick (non-4K) and Fire TV Stick Lite | No, Full HD is the limit |
| Samsung and LG 4K Smart TVs | Yes, using an app installed on the TV itself |
| Android TV and Google TV boxes sold as 4K | Yes |
| Phones and tablets | Varies with the screen; on mobile data, often capped at Full HD |
| Windows and Mac | Yes, with a 4K monitor and hardware HEVC decoding (found on most computers made since 2016) |
Your screen must be 4K as well: plug a 4K stick into a Full HD television and you get Full HD. On top of that, the player needs to decode HEVC (H.265), the format behind most 4K streams. The players recommended in our setup guides handle it; older devices that lack hardware HEVC decoding will take a 4K stream but play it badly. VLC on a computer turns hardware decoding on by default; if 4K stutters, make sure it is enabled in Preferences, under Input / Codecs.
How much of the catalogue is 4K
Only part of it. In every IPTV catalogue, 4K is one slice among others: certain sport, film and documentary channels, plus some of the on-demand library. Everything else comes in Full HD or HD, since that is the quality it is broadcast in. Once your details are loaded, browse the channel groups for anything marked 4K or UHD.
Connect the streamer to the television through an HDMI port with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support. Many televisions offer this on just one or two ports, marked 4K, UHD or ARC. You may also have to turn on an “enhanced” or “UHD colour” option in the television’s HDMI settings. HDR appears only when the channel is broadcast in HDR and your television supports it.
To confirm the picture really is 4K, bring up the stream information in your player (in TiviMate, press OK and then the info button). You should see 3840×2160 or 2160p. A reading of 1920×1080 means the channel is Full HD, no matter what its name says.
When a 4K channel stutters
Switch to the Full HD version of that channel. It plays smoothly straight away on a slower line or an older device, and from the sofa the difference is hard to spot on most televisions.
Tips for steady 4K
- Use a cable for the streamer, or keep it in the same room as the router.
- While you watch, close other apps and pause big downloads on the same network.
- Your subscription plays one stream at a time, so just one device watches at once. Everything else online in the house, from a game download to a video call, still draws on the same line.
Questions readers ask
- Are all Xtreme IPTV channels in 4K?
- No. Only part of the catalogue is 4K: some sport, film and documentary channels plus a portion of the library. Everything else is Full HD or HD, the way it is broadcast.
- What internet speed does 4K IPTV need?
- Roughly 25 Mbps, holding steady, measured in the evening on the device you watch on. For Full HD, roughly 15 Mbps is enough.
- Can a Fire TV Stick play 4K IPTV?
- Yes on the Fire TV Stick 4K, Stick 4K Max and Fire TV Cube. The standard Fire TV Stick and the Stick Lite go no higher than Full HD.
